maplesausage04 Maple Braised Italian Sausage with Apples

We haven’t talked about meat in awhile.  Actually, it seems I’ve only posted one other recipe for meat before this one, Moroccan Spiced Roasted Chicken.  It’s not that we don’t eat meat, but we only have it a couple of times a week.  Furthermore, since we didn’t eat meat for the first many years I was learning to cook, I have far fewer tried-and-true meat recipes than vegetarian ones.  Which is a nice way of saying I make a lot of mistakes and don’t often feel confident telling you Do This And Everything Will Work Out, for meat recipes.   The things I consistently do well you don’t need a recipe for, like hamburgers and BLTs and taco meat. Last week it was 80 degrees and I was sending the kids to school in shorts. This weekend it was so cold that we turned on the heat and wore gloves to the soccer field. My Facebook feed is full of people talking about apple picking, and we harvested seventeen pounds of butternut squash from the garden.

In short, fall has arrived to the northeast. Bring on the root vegetables! Bring on the soup!

Mini-Calzones for School Lunches

September 12, 2011
Mini-Calzones for School Lunch

It’s that time of year again, but this September, things are a little different. Last week, when the school bus came, both of my kids got on it and went off to school. I now have a second grader, a kindergartener, and a much quieter house. Having two kids in school is great in practically [...]

Irene and Nectarine Cake

Everyday Cake with Nectarines

Last Saturday, we drove home from a week on the coast of Maine and straight into natural disaster preparation.  Hurricane Irene didn’t inconvenience us too much on a personal level; water in the basement, no power for a little over a day, one tree down, and some spoiled food were all we had to bear. [...]

August Garden Update

August 18, 2011

When I started this blog, I had visions of writing not just about recipes, but also my adventures in community gardening.  Hence the tab over to the left: The Garden.  However, it turns out that the more time I spend in the garden, the less time I spend on the computer.  It’s funny how that [...]

Granola Bars, for Camping and Beyond

August 12, 2011
Homemade Granola Bars

We went tent camping in the Adirondacks last weekend, at Lincoln Pond Campground in Essex County, NY.  We stayed at one of the so-called primitive sites, with a pit toilet and no potable water.  It was wonderful. Although my husband and I spent a lot of time camping in our previous lives, this was our first [...]

Zucchini Spaghetti with Pesto

Oh hey, it’s August already.  Wow.  This has been a particularly high-yielding season in more ways than one, and the time has flown.  Here are some things that have been overwhelming about this summer: 1) five significant trips out of town,  2) three long weekends with houseguests,  3) one baby shower,  4) one major move [...]

Baingan Bharta: Spicy Roasted Eggplant

I believe that there are no uninspiring vegetables, only uninspiring preparations.  I might have said that before; now that I’ve been blogging for a year I’m pretty sure I’ll occasionally repeat myself.

Kale & Beet Green Pesto

Kale and Beet Green Pesto

It has been established that I love kale.  However, I love it less in the middle of summer when there are so many other vegetables requiring my adoration.  Vegetables that will only be fresh for a season, like summer squash, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, and corn.  Sweet, sweet corn.  They’re flashy and colorful and turn [...]

Peanut Butter & Jelly Frozen Yogurt Pops

Peanut Butter and Jelly Frozen Yogurt Pops

My daughter Maia was just shy of two years old when she had her first peanut butter sandwich.  She loved it.  She loved it to absolute pieces. Maia is a natural story teller from way back, and she spent the next year of her life periodically reliving the Grand Inaugural Peanut Butter Sandwich Event, which [...]
